Martlets Drop One to NMH

Back at it for another season, Westminster opened 2018-2019 against a stalwart NMH team that was fast and physical. The Martlets played hard, putting their speed to work early, and were able to capitalize midway through the first period. Sean Clarke ‘19 scored from the goalie’s left side after getting control of a loose puck. The rest of the first period was even, though Westminster had a few more quality opportunities. They simply were unable to find the proper space and timing. NMH did not fall away, and continued to get pucks deep and create odd-man situations off turnovers. NMH would even the score midway through the second period, and then they took advantage of a power play, sending Westminster to the locker room down 2-1 heading into the third period. The Martlets battled through most of the third period down 2-1. NMH continued to play a simple game, keeping Westminster away from the net and preventing high quality chances. With under five minutes to play, NMH took a penalty and Westminster took advantage. Will Gilson ‘20 found Jordie McKenna ‘19 and was able to get him the puck through traffic. The Martlets were able to climb back into the game, but with only two minutes left, NMH was able to bang a bouncing puck behind Ian Shane ‘20 for the win. Shane had a great game, keeping the score close by turning away some high-quality opportunities down the stretch. Choate comes to town on Wednesday, and the Martlets will look to get into the win column.
