Great Start for the Martlets

First Girls' Hockey had a strong start against the tough St. Mark's team. The beginning of the first period was even as both teams worked to set the tempo. Westminster at times was more reactionary than aggressive, and St. Mark's capitalized by putting the first goal up at the 12-minute mark. Sure enough, the Martlets used this as a wake-up call and through the leadership of Sixth Form captains Jill Parsons and Hannah Carbone, the team took to the ice with more discipline. Just three minutes later, Taylor Adams '20 capitalized on a back door play to even the score. With the momentum on its side, Westminster turned up the tempo of play and executed the forecheck flawlessly. To finish the period, Casey Winslow '21 found the back of the net on a pass from Nina Ausperger '19 giving the Martlets the lead at the break. With first game jitters out of the way, the team hit its stride in the second period. Abby Munger '20 scored an outstanding goal that feed the energy of the team. Just one minute later, Adams struck again off a pass from Parsons and Munger. The team continued its roll as Parsons scored a perfectly placed goal off an assist from Munger. The third period brought more even play, yet goaltender Mandy Busky '21 was ready to make up for late game errors. The team had set the goal to start the season with urgency and with good team play. They left the rink tonight having accomplished this, but will hit the ice tomorrow with their eyes set on a tough Hill team on Saturday.
