Spring Sports Highlights for 5.21.18

Baseball - First Boys'
May 14: Baseball - First Boys’ 9 vs Gunnery School 3
On a beautiful afternoon at Westminster's Osborne Field, a trio of Martlet pitchers combined to hold an excellent Gunnery lineup to three runs, while also striking out 10 over seven innings. Josh Cosentino '19 and Ethan Puhala '19 bookended the pitching effort, each throwing a scoreless outing. Sean Ryan '18 pitched the middle frames and led the team offensively with two hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Other Martlets collecting two hits apiece were Joseph Patrina '18, Matt Cosentino '18, and Josh Cosentino. A final highlight came in the fifth inning when Simon Aber '18 scored Jack Stevenson '18 from first base with a tremendous two out double down the left field line. Aber later scored as well, which opened up the lead for a second time. The Martlets added another run in the sixth, which turned out to be the final run in a 9-3 victory.

May 16: Baseball - Second Boys’ 5 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 9
Ryan Szykowny '18 pitched well for six innings with Harry Stevenson '20 pitching a strong seventh inning with two strikeouts. Elton Paintsil '18 was also strong defensively.

Golf - First Girls'
May 14: Golf - First Girls' at the Pippy O'Connor Invitational
First Girls’ Golf ventured to Watertown Country Club to play in the annual Pippy O'Connor tournament that, for all intents and purposes, is the New England Golf Championship with many teams from both the east and the west. There is both a nine-hole division and an 18-hole division, with the latter reflecting some of the very best players in New England. Susie Mahoney ' 20 carried the torch for the Martlets in the 18-hole tournament and competed hard but could not break the top 10. The low medalist shot a remarkable 73. The rest of the Martlets competed in the nine-hole division with Becca Gavel '18 and Eve Cathcart '20, Westminster's low players, tied at the sixth spot. Elaina Comia '19 took the 20th spot, Katie Kosior '18 at 28th and Ishika Nathan ’19 at 32. Unfortunately, co-captain Elisabeth Morin '18 dislocated her shoulder and was forced out of competition.

May 16: Golf - First Girls’ 3 vs Miss Porter's School 2
The Martlets squared off against Miss Porter's for the first time this season and earned an exciting 3-2 victory over its "valley" opponent. Both teams played well with the outcome of two matches realized on the par 3 ninth hole. Highlights included Susie Mahoney '20, Eve Cathcart '20, Ishika Nathan' 19 each posting key wins in their respective matches. Becca Gavel'18 also played well, succumbing to a gritty opponent on the final hole of play.

Golf - First Boys'
May 16: Golf - First Boys’ 206 vs Williston Northampton School 196 vs Deerfield Academy 190
Under overcast skies at the tricky Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass., First Boys’ Golf team fell to two very strong opponents in Deerfield and WNS. Although the Westminster squad fired a respectable score of 206, it was no match for the impressive play by Deerfield (190) and WNS (196). Kimberly Stafford (Deerfield) and Matt Brosseau (Deerfield) shared match medalist honors with scores of 37 (+1). For Westminster, Peyton Knauf '19 led the way with a score of 39, followed by Ian Broadbent '18 (41), Grant Noble '18 (42), Ned Blanchard '20 (42), Carson Roth '19 (42) and Justin Flaks '20 (43).

Golf - Second Boys'
May 16: Golf - Second Boys’ 215 vs Hotchkiss School 221 vs Taft School 209 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 241
Second Boys' Golf traveled to Lakeville, Conn., to compete against host, Hotchkiss, Choate and Taft in a tri-match. The Martlets total team score (215) was good enough to defeat Hotchkiss (221) and Choate (241) but fell short of Taft's solid (209), their best team total of the year. Match medalist was James Horrocks '19, normally a varsity player from Hotchkiss, who shot a fine 36. Westminster scores included David Harris '21 (42), Alex Gadowski '18 (43), Charlie von Stade '21 (44), Darion Benchich '20 (41), Wes Oltsch '20 (45) and Peter Sanger '21 (45). Unfortunately, Sanger had a quality round going until the par 3 eighth hole when the golf demons struck and the course got the better of him. Given that only one Martlet had played this relatively tricky course before today, a 215 total wasn't a bad effort.

Lacrosse - First Girls'
May 16: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 7 vs Loomis Chaffee 14
Westminster hit the road again to start its weeklong stretch of five away contests, starting with Loomis. It took a significant amount of time for Westminster to gain possession and get on the board, but the Martlets played with grit and grace throughout and turned in a solid game. The Pelicans of Loomis came out strong, winning draws and holding the ball in their attacking end for minutes on end and notched eight goals that would go unanswered by the Martlets for more than 15 minutes. But then, Westminster figured out its midfield transition, thanks to great saves by goalie Ellie Bailey '21 and strong breakouts from defender Jenny Guider '20, and began to chip away at the deficit. The teams broke for half with the score of 2-9 favoring the home Pelicans. The Martlets, however, did not let up and continued to compete for the draw and 50/50 balls and worked until the final minutes, coming up only seven goals short — a victory in itself after the eight quick first half goals that seemed to stun the Martlets. Shannon Keefe ‘19, Georgia Nolan ‘20, captain Emma Alpaugh ‘18 and Blake Cote ‘19 scored goals. Captain Emma Lange '18 notched two assists and added four caused turnovers.

May 17: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 5 vs Miss Porter's School 6
The Martlets traveled to Farmington to play Miss Porter’s School. The team took many, many minutes to wake up and get in the game and that ultimately proved to be the issue in terms of converting possession to goals. Westminster struggled to find the back of the net, allowing the MPS goalie to make easy saves. Westminster goalie Ellie Bailey ‘21 has several tremendous first half stops, but the Martlets had trouble making their possessions count by getting goals on the board.

May 19: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 9 vs Hotchkiss School 16
The Martlets traveled to soggy Lakeville, Conn., to take on Hotchkiss on May 19. Both teams struggled with possession, each squad coming up with interceptions, caused turnovers, and ground balls due to the sometimes sloppy play, but Westminster got on the board first with a goal just 40 seconds into the game. Hotchkiss answered back one minute later and both teams kept it close throughout the first half. At the end of the 25 minutes, the Bearcats led the Martlets 7-4. The Bearcats came out faster than the Martlets at the start of second half and it took some time for Westminster to gain footing again and get possession. Despite fantastic defense by the Black and Gold, specifically Meg Rittenhouse ‘20, Greta Baker ‘19, McKenzie Roller ‘20 and Susie Renehan ‘19, and tremendous plays by midfielder Georgia Swank ‘19, Westminster couldn’t chip away at the deficit in enough time to get the victory. Captains Emma Alpaugh ‘18 and Emma Lange ‘18 both turned in another fantastic all-around effort while attacker Casey Winslow ‘21 was effective in the offense, putting one in the back of the net.

May 20: Western New England Class A Playday
Lacrosse - First Girls’ 6 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 1
Lacrosse - First Girls’ 5 vs Hotchkiss 4
Lacrosse - First Girls’ 10 vs Kent 4
It was a true showing of grit and grace from the Martlets as they went undefeated at the Western New England Class A Playday in Wallingford, Conn. on May 20. The Martlets returned to the Hill at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday evening after their away game at Hotchkiss to turn around and head to Choate for an all-day play day early Sunday morning. Despite the quick turn around, Westminster First Girls' Lacrosse took the fields at Choate and did not look back. The team put the pieces together, played together and came up incredibly successful beating Kent 10-4, Hotchkiss 5-4 and Choate 6-1.

Lacrosse - Second Girls'
May 16: Lacrosse - Second Girls’ 5 vs Loomis Chaffee 9
Second Girls’ Lacrosse came out firing on all-cylinders against the Pelicans of Loomis Chaffee. Rebecca Sargent '20 put the Martlets on the board a minute into the game as she buried a pretty feed from Katy Maxon '18. A minute later Natalie Fay '19 picked up a rebounded save off the Pelican goalie and nipped the upper corner to put the Martlets up two goals. The Martlet offense was starting to find its stride but the Pelicans regrouped and netted a few goals to take the lead at the half. The Martlets had trouble finding their rhythm again until late in the game when Ella Varano '21 won a draw, drove to goal and put a hard shot past the Pelican keeper. Maddie Dwyer '18 scored a minute later and Sargent netted another before time ran out. Rachel Ha '21 played a great game in goal and the defense worked hard all day to double-team the Pelicans.

May 17: Lacrosse - Second Girls’ 7 vs Miss Porter's School 1
Seconds Girls' Lacrosse travelled across the Farmington Valley to take on the Fighting Daisies of Miss Porter's. The Martlets took charge of the game early as Annabelle Smith '21 scored the first goal off a pretty feed from Ella Varano '21. Varano netted the next and the Martlets offense found their groove. Goalie Rachel Ha '21 had a great game in goal, making seven saves on the day and holding the Daisies to one goal in the game. Natalie Fay '19, Katy Maxon '18, Celia Sotirhos '21 and Kate Lovas '18 also scored.

Lacrosse - Second Boys'
May 14: Lacrosse - Second Boys’ 7 vs Cardigan Mountain School 16
It was hot and dry on the turf as the boys took on Cardigan Mountain School. The teams were evenly matched, and throughout the majority of the first half remained almost neck and neck, with the score 5-7 at the end of the second quarter. Daniel Pinckney ’20 and Chanler Miller ’18 gave commendable effort in the first half, bringing life to the offense. Cardigan held Westminster to five goals during the third quarter, and then James Plumb ’18 and Travis Paulsen ’20 ended the dry spell.

May 19: Lacrosse - Second Boys’ 11 vs Eaglebrook School 4
Heading to Eaglebrook for one of their wettest games of the season, the Martlets of Seconds Lacrosse took the first half by storm. Dishing up a shutout first and second quarter and taking six points for themselves (including a crease-bound Canadian quick stick by Third Form promise Nate Stevens), the boys held firm on defense with little regard to an unexpectedly short bench. Despite entering the second half man-down for two minutes, the Martlets wasted no time taking a seventh goal for their own before the boys of Eaglebrook managed their first. As the rain’s intensity increased, so did the boys’ level of play. Westminster finished proudly at 11-4, showing a spirit not extinguished by the rains.

Lacrosse - Third Boys'
May 18: Lacrosse - Third Boys’ 10 vs Loomis Chaffee 2
The Martlets — down nine players — were able to buckle down and get a nice home win to head into the weekend. The first quarter started quick for Westminster as the team scored just eight seconds into the game with a great face off win. Things would balance out a little and see the home side take a 5-1 lead into halftime. The second half was more of the same as the home side would double up and take a 10-2 win. Ben Ferrell '21 would have a solid six-save day. Game balls would go to AJ Paladino '21 for his first goal of the season, William Mell '21 with a great goal by a long-pole and Nate Swift '19 for two goals on the day.

Softball - First Girls'
May 14: Softball - First Girls’ 8 vs Ethel Walker School 3
Emily Samar '18 and Gabby Nemarich '20 had three hits apiece and drove in multiple runs as the Martlets prevailed against a strong Ethel Walker team. Ashlee White '18, Katie Neilsen '18 and Ally Marenco '18 each had two hits to help spark Westminster. Meg Cournoyer '19 added a single and an RBI. Nemarich had two doubles, which led to offensive outbursts for the Martlets in the first and fourth innings. Marenco pitched well, allowing just seven base hits against a fine lineup. White and Hannah Stone '18 were the defensive stars of the game, fielding their positions well at shortstop and third base. Neilsen was sharp at first base, and Nemarich made some nice catches in centerfield. Samar had another stellar afternoon behind the plate for the Black and Gold.

May 16: Softball - First Girls’ 5 vs Marianapolis Preparatory School 4
Emily Samar '18 tripled and drove in two runs in the seventh inning to lead the Martlets to a come from behind victory over Marianapolis. Trailing 4-3 after six innings, Westminster's last minute rally began with hits by Taylor Adams '20 and Ashlee White '18. Following Samar's triple, pitcher Ally Marenco '18 shut down a talented Marianapolis lineup in the bottom of the frame to seal the win. Marenco received strong defensive support throughout the afternoon, with nice plays by infielders Mandy Busky '21, Katie Neilsen '18, Hannah Stone '18, White and outfielders Gabby Nemarich '20 and Adams. Facing a fine Marianapolis pitcher, Busky, Adams and White had multiple hits for the Black and Gold. Stone also doubled and scored a run for the Martlets. It was the 11th consecutive win for Westminster.

May 17: Softball - First Girls’ 18 vs Miss Porter's School 7
Ashlee White '18, Emily Samar '18, Gabby Nemarich '20 and Taylor Adams '20 each had multiple hits to lead the Martlets to a home win over Miss Porter's. With the victory, Westminster capped an undefeated Founders League regular season. The 2018 season marked the 10th Founders League Championship for the team in the last 12 years. Adams, Nemarich and White began the game with two RBIs apiece in the first inning. Mandy Busky '21, Ally Marenco '18, Lucy Noel '18, Hannah Stone '18 and Samar also had run scoring hits as Westminster jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. Marenco and Bethany Winters '20 combined to pitch for Westminster, and the team was also impressive in the field throughout the afternoon. Stone and White made a number of fine plays at third base and shortstop, and Marenco was perfect in fielding her position. Samar and Meg Cournoyer '19 were strong behind the plate.

Class A Western New England Tournament
May 20: Softball - First Girls’ 7 vs Taft 11
The Martlets lost a hard-fought contest against Taft on May 20 in the semi-final of the Class A Western New England Tournament. The team fell behind in the top of the first inning, but quickly tied the score on a home run by Ashlee White '18. In the third frame, Emily Samar '18 launched a two-run homer to give Westminster the lead. Gabby Nemarich '20 and Hannah Stone '18 followed with singles and Mandy Busky '21 drove in a run to make it a 4-1 game. However, in the fourth inning a combination of walks, Taft hits and some uncharacteristic miscues in the field led to the Martlets falling behind 8-4. Taft extended the lead in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning Westminster scored three runs on singles by Busky, Ally Marenco '18, Meg Cournoyer '19 and a double by White. Marenco finished strong by pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning, but the Martlets were unable to overcome the four-run deficit. The team is grateful for the tremendous contributions of Seniors Ally Marenco, Katie Neilsen, Lucy Noel, Emily Samar, Hannah Stone and Ashlee White. During their years at Westminster, the team has achieved a record of 59 wins and four losses, capturing four Founders League titles and two Western New England Championships.

Tennis - First Girls'
May 16: Tennis - First Girls’ 8 vs Loomis Chaffee 1
In their final regular season home match, the Martlets hosted Loomis and held off both the rain and the Pelicans to earn their 10th win of the season. The underformers put together a spirited celebration of their two Sixth Form captains, Mary Kille and Nat Wilson, and their Sixth Form managers Dallis Alvarez and Jessie Schuhlen. With this distraction, it took awhile for some of the Martlets to get focused in doubles. Ellie Suit '20 and Clara Ekholm '20 found themselves down 1-5 to start the match. They were able to refocus and tighten up their play and stormed back to win 8-6. Lauren Way '20 and Alex Wolf '19 were their usual calm and composed throughout their match and won 8-2. At the No. 1 spot, Kille and Wilson struggled against a solid pair and were down almost the entirety of the match. The Pelicans had match point, but determined not to lose on senior day the Black and Gold tied up the match at 8-8 and ultimately won the tiebreaker 7-3. Maggie Chaves '19 was first to claim victory in singles winning 8-3 at No. 6. At this point the drizzle began, but the coaches said to play on. Way earned the victory for the Martlets at No. 3 winning 8-3. Olivia Zhang '20 also played with confidence and strength at No. 2, coming out on top 8-4. Ekholm started down at No. 5 but rallied to win 8-4 and finally not to be outdone, Kille had another come-from-behind win at No. 1 singles, 8-5.

New England Class B Tennis Tournament
May 19: Tennis - First Girls’ 6 vs Middlesex School 0
Despite the rain, the New England Class B Tennis Tournament started up in the morning on May 19 indoors at Kingswood Oxford. The Martlets, the No. 2 seed, faced Middlesex in the first round. The Black and Gold got out to a fast start in the doubles. Nat Wilson '18 and Mary Kille '18 at No. 1, Clara Ekholm '20 and Ellie Suit '20 at No. 2, and Lauren Way '20 and Alex Wolf '19 at No. 3 all took control from the first serve and efficiently took care of business. The singles players headed to the courts and secured three more wins: Olivia Zhang '20 at No. 2, Ekholm at No. 5 and Maggie Chaves '19 at No. 6.

New England Class B Tennis Tournament
May 19: Tennis - First Girls’ 5 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 2
The Martlets competed for the second time in one day in the semi-final matchup with Kingswood Oxford. The Martlets expected a competitive contest and that is what they got. The team knew it would be key to win the three doubles matches, and the Wyverns made this a challenge. Lauren Way '20 and Alex Wolf '19 had the easiest time of any of the pairs winning 8-3 at No. 3. Mary Kille '18 and Nat Wilson '18 found themselves in a back-and-forth battle at No. 1 but pulled away to win 8-6. Clara Ekholm '20 and Ellie Suit '20 found themselves down 4-1 at No. 2 but battled back to win 8-5. The Martlets had secured three victories and needed just two more to advance to the finals. Way made it four at No. 3, winning efficiently 6-2, 6-0. With one left to win, the Martlets found themselves challenged at several spots on the ladder. The Black and Gold dropped both No. 1 and No. 2 singles before Suit clinched the win at No. 4. While the score was 6-2, 6-2, the points were endless and Suit persevered in her fourth match of the day to get what was needed to push the team into the finals.

New England Class B Tennis Tournament
May 20: Tennis - First Girls’ 0 vs Hopkins School 5
Westminster ran into an impressive Hopkins squad in the Class B New England Finals and could not match their strong play. The Hilltoppers repeated as champions, showing that they were in a league of their own. The Martlets played well in doubles with each team earning some games off of their opponents but were unable to string together enough games to put up a significant challenge. Hopkins got out to a quick start in some of the singles, which allowed them to bring the match to a fairly quick finish. Ellie Suit '20 at No. 4 was the only Martlet to win her first set and was up 3-0 in the second before the match was called. Lauren Way '20 and Maggie Chaves '19 also were competitive against their opponents. All in all it was a great weekend as the Martlets brought home the runner-up trophy for the first time in the program’s history.

Tennis - First Boys'
May 16: Tennis - First Boys’ 6 vs Kent School 0
The courts were dry to start, but the forecast said the clouds would open and both coaches agreed to start with singles first to try and get the match played. Just as play began, the sprinkles came and the courts were on the verge of being too slippery to play. The rain let up and the matches went forward. Nikola Kostic (captain) '18 was first off, allowing only one game against in two sets. Ethan Na '19 followed and Connor Seeley (captain) '18 made it three wins at No. 6. The Kent players kept things close at No. 5 and No. 6 and No. 1. Carl Ekholm '19 did some sliding, but prevailed. Azat Mukhametkulov ’19 dropped his second set and took a 9-5 lead in his third set tiebreaker before finally closing it out 10-8. Grant McCargo '21 came from behind twice to win both of his sets 7-5, the last one with the whole team watching, which seemed to inspire better play from him. With the match decided, Kent opted to forgo the doubles so they could make a timely return home. As the teams left, the skies opened and rain returned. Doubles would have been a wash in any case.

May 17: Tennis - First Boys’ 0 vs Taft School 7
Perennial Class A Tournament entrant Taft was heavily favored on paper vs the Martlets and the final score reflected Taft's dominance, but the Westminster fought hard and nearly took some second sets. The match began close to 5 p.m. with doubles. Grant McCargo '21 and Nikola Kostic (captain) '18 earned the most games with four, but all teams had many deuces. Azat Mukhametkulov '19 held his serve two times at No. 1 doubles. In singles, Taft won a number of first sets rather quickly. Kostic played a very talented player at No. 3 with a big serve and sneaky good shots, just when he seemed out of the point. In one rally Kostic had three successive balls at the net. After his opponent somehow got two back from the far deuce corner, Kostic planted a ball short near the doubles alley on the ad side. Not only did his opponent scramble to the ball but also hit it cross-court by the surprised Kostic at net for a winner. So good was the shot, there was no chance of a volley. Taft Coach Peter Frew mentioned that his No. 4 was perhaps the best No. 4 he had ever had, but it was little consolation to McCargo who seemed dejected by his result. Connor Seeley (captain ) '18 got a break in set one and held serve once in set two for his two games won. Ethan Na '19 made some great adjustments in set two and had a number of deuces that finally went to his opponent, who was as precise as Na, but faster and even more consistent. Carl Ekholm '19 stayed on serve for most of his second set, but neither player was holding serve. The first four games were all breaks. Ekholm was happy to be playing an opponent who put pace on the ball. Serving to even his second set at 5-5, Ekholm was broken again but knew he had played well in defeat. At No. 1, Mukhametkulov took an early lead in set two on the wings of his strong serve. His serve is not slow, but also not overpowering. It is precise and varied and can be sneaky fast. Up 5-4, Mukhametkulov had a number of long deuce games before dropping the last three games and the match. He, too, rode home knowing he had given his best.

May 14: Tennis - Second Boys’ 2 vs Eaglebrook School 5
A young but talented Eaglebrook squad showed poise beyond their years on the courts in defeating the Martlets 5-2. Scott Lee '20 and James Chun '19 were the lone victors in doubles play. Meanwhile, Jimmy Zhang '18 outlasted his opponent 8-5 at No. 2 singles. Ashton Howey '18 continued his excellent senior campaign with an 8-6 victory over a formidable opponent at No. 1 singles.

Tennis - Third Girls'
May 14: Tennis - Third Girls’ 3 vs Ethel Walker School 4
On a beautiful spring afternoon, Westminster hosted a talented team from the Ethel Walker School. Getting the match off to an promising start were No. 3 doubles Lizzy McCoy '20 and Christina Zahringer '20; on the next court over were No. 2 doubles Mairead DeFronzo '20 and Izzy Bailey '21. While neither team emerged victorious, the girls battled for every point. On the singles side, Isabel von Bargen-Burke '19 played No. 3 singles and Annie Brewer '21 played No. 4 singles. Von Bargen-Burke's opponent had a very strong serve, and von Bargen-Burke gave her a run for her money, but ultimately did not prevail. The team rallied around the remaining players. Playing No. 1, Jennifer Jerand '19 played a girl who was very consistent, but Jerand was steady and won her match 8-4. At No. 2 singles, Eda Chen '20 also played a girl who was her equal in ability, and won her match 8-6. The remaining No. 1 doubles team of Lily Carrel '19 and Siena Holowesko '21 were out on the courts for a long time. Although they fell behind in games for a period of time, they battled back to win 8-6.

May 16: Tennis - Third Girls’ 2 vs Hotchkiss School 5
Third Girls’ Tennis took to the road in the hopes that a loss to Hotchkiss earlier this season might be avenged. Alas, the stars were not aligned on this occasion. The first win came at No. 4 singles with Annie Brewer '21 putting Westminster on the board, winning 6-0. Playing at No. 1 doubles were Isabel von Bargen-Burke '19 and Lily Carrel '19, playing at No. 2 doubles (and ending with an close score of 4-6) were Mairead DeFronzo '20 and Izzy Bailey '21, and at No. 3 doubles were Christina Zahringer '20 and Lizzy McCoy '20. Losses in all three doubles matches meant that Westminster was down and needed to win the remaining singles in order to win the match. Eda Chen '20, playing at No. 2 singles, emerged victorious. Chen's match was one in which the players had equal levels of skill, and Chen came out on top 6-3. Playing No. 1 singles, Jennifer Jerand '19 found that her opponent was a steady fighter. The two girls had many long rallies, and many games went to deuce. Unfortunately, because of the threat of rain, the team was playing no-ad; this meant that many of Jerand's games were decided on a single point. Unfortunately, luck would not go the team’s way this afternoon and Jerand lost 3-6. The team had the good fortune to watch most of Siena Holowesko '21 playing at No. 3 singles. Holowesko battled back from losing the first two games to tie the match at 6-6, eventually falling to her opponent in a tiebreak.

New England Tournament
May 19: Track - First Boys' vs New England Championship
The Martlet athletes represented their school and themselves well at the NEPSTA Division II Track and Field Championships hosted at Tabor Academy. On the boys’ side, Teagan Stedman '18 finished fifth in the 800m and set a new school record, besting a 14-year-old mark, in a time of 2:00.55. Male athletes marked another eight personal bests. Drew Brownback '19 finished second in the pole vault. The boys 4x100m relay team of Brandon Williams '18, Matt Park '21, Nate Pane '19 and Sean Clarke '19 finished in sixth place. Williams went on to score in two other events as he took fourth in the 110m high hurdles and third in the 300m hurdles running a personal best time of 43.51 seconds. Pane also ran a personal best in the 400m. The 800m saw all three boys run personal bests: Emmett de Kanter ‘19 and Daniel Chey ‘18 followed Stedman’s record run. De Kanter, who took fourth in the 1500m, also ran a personal best there at 4:09.35 and was followed by Chey who posted his own personal best time to close out his career as a Martlet. One more Sixth Former went on to post a personal best in his final Westminster competition: John Kuzminskas '18 ran the 3000m in 9:51.65 to improve on his time from last week. The meet closed with a surprise sixth place performance from the 4x400m relay team of Pane, Brownback, Stedman and de Kanter.

May 19: Track - First Girls' vs New England Championship
Despite cool and damp conditions, the athletes represented their school and themselves well at the always-competitive NEPSTA Division II Track and Field Championships hosted at Tabor Academy. Natalie Rubin '19 posted two personal bests of 5:20.81 in the 1500m and 2:35.09 in the 800m. Maya Ruffin '19 posted a personal best of 28-10 in the shot put and made the final round of contestants in the discus. Alisa Toner '21 made the final round of competition in the javelin.
