Martlets Fall to AOF

In their first home match of the season, the Martlets played tough for all eighty minutes, showing some flashes of high quality soccer before ultimately falling to Avon Old Farms. Avon took an early two-goal lead, but the Martlets kept competing, eventually creating an opportunity for Carter Styspeck ‘26 to drill home a loose-ball goal. At the end of the first half, Avon capitalized on Westminster’s struggles to clear the ball, scoring two more goals before the break. Early in the first half, Jack Doherty ‘26 used his speed to burst through the Avon defense and put away a breakaway goal. After Avon added their fifth tally, Thomas Blouin ‘26 brought the Martlets within two when he forced his way past several Avon defenders, adding the Martlets third and final goal of the day. With a tie score within reach, Westminster–led by Blouin’s tough play at the midfield and Aidan O’Callaghan ‘26 and Henry Baird’s ‘26 booming kicks from the backline–had several scoring chances, but the Martlets struggled to get the ball on net once it was in the box. Westminster’s aggressive play in the final minutes gave the Winged Bears two easy insurance goals before the final whistle. The Fourths once again proved they can play gritty soccer, but the focus this week will be learning to play smart soccer in the lead up to next week’s match at Deerfield.
