Students Compete in Fourth Annual Public Speaking Contest

Fifteen Fourth Formers participated in Westminster’s fourth annual Public Speaking Contest April 25 in Sejong Lecture Hall. They each gave original speeches before a panel of faculty judges and their peers. The students were selected for the competition based on the quality of the speeches they wrote and presented during their winter trimester Speech Writing and Public Speaking course.

After welcoming the audience to the competition, Todd Eckerson, the lead teacher for Public Speaking, explained how the tradition of public speaking contests has a long history at Westminster going back to 1924 and was reinstituted in 2016. The last contest prior to 2016 was in 1958.

The 2019 finalists included Aleyna Baki, Izzy Bailey, Francesca Bradley, Annie Brewer, Jane Burke, Wiley Clarke, Olivia Goldstuck, Lucy Jones, Harrison Lehman, Jordy Nelson, Bennett Ostern, Eva Pfeiffer, Simonne Ponce, Hudson Stedman and Andrea Warrick.

The faculty judges evaluated each speech on a number of categories and then deliberated to select a winner who will be announced during commencement weekend.
