Delegation of Students and Faculty Attend National Conference

A group of nine Westminster students and faculty members traveled to Atlanta Dec. 7-10 to participate in the annual National Association of Independent School’s People of Color Conference/Student Diversity Leadership Conference (PoCC/SDLC) titled “Advancing Human and Civil Rights – Fulfilling the Dream Together.”
 
SDLC participants were ​Jordan Clapprood ’18, ​​Meg Cournoyer ’19, Anissa Joseph ’17, ​Ray Rivers ’17 and Mia Stevens ’18. They all applied last spring to represent Westminster and were selected by the Faculty Diversity Committee. PoCC participants were ​Third Form Dean Grant Gritzmacher, ​​Fifth Form Dean Lee Huguley, Director of Multicultural Affairs Lisa McGrath, and Director of College Counseling Greg Williams​.
 
Keynote speaker Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, an​ ​acclaimed and respected lawyer in the nation and writer of​ “Just Mercy,” welcomed participants in​ ​his​ ​opening ceremony address​ on the first day.​ ​The students attended multiracial and multiethnic group discussions on self-reflection, ally building,​ and cross-cultural communication. The faculty participated in sessions​ that included speakers Richard Blanco, the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history who also served as the Westminster Poet last year, and Zak Ebrahim, the author of “The Terrorist’s Son: A Story of Choice” whose father co-masterminded the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Lisa McGrath represented Westminster when she led a workshop that addressed the experiences of faculty of color in boarding schools.
