Dec. 17: Basketball-First Boys’ 62 vs Governor’s Academy 71
It was a hard fought game for both teams but the boys from Governor’s pulled away late. The Martlets led at moments in the first and second half respectively, but they couldn't sustain that momentum. Chris Swanson '17 and Daniel Kong ’17 shot the ball well. Devonte McCall '17 and Max Brigham '18 did a nice job on defense.

Hockey-First Girls’
Harrington Invitational
Dec. 16: Hockey-First Girls’ 3 vs St. Paul's School 2
The team had an exciting start to the invitational as it earned a shout-out victory over a talented St. Paul's team. Westminster struggled at first to get its feet going. Play was further slowed by penalties and a bit of "puck watching". Outstanding play by Westminster goalie, Leah Klassen '17 kept the team in it as the score was tied 0-0 after the first. St. Paul's came out flying in the second. Solid defensive play by Hannah Carbone '19 and Jenny Guider '20 kept the front of the net clear. Forwards Mackenzie Griffith '17, Rosy Sieglaff '18 and Cynnie White '17 got some momentum going as they executed the team forecheck flawlessly. Halfway through the second, the puck floated to the top of the Westminster zone. A St. Paul's player was able to get a hard shot through, while another buried the rebound putting them up 1-0. As the teams went to the locker room after the second, it was clear Westminster had a lot of work to do to even the tempo. The start of the third period again belonged to St. Paul's. At the eight-minute mark St. Paul’s scored again to go up 2-0. In the play immediately following, Jill Parsons '19 was able to draw a penalty giving Westminster a much-needed boost. Westminster called a timeout and Coach David Pope energized the girls by asking for their best hockey for the next minute and thirty seconds. Center Lilly Holmes '18 won the face off and Westminster battled to get it to the front of the net. Taylor Adams '20 notched a top shelf goal off a pass from Ashlee White '18. The momentum clearly swung in Westminster's favor. Less than two minutes later, Megan Rittenhouse '20 received a pass from Adams and Guider and entered the zone with speed. She let a bullet go and scored bar-down to even it at 2-2. Overtime resulted in a stalemate yet again and per tournament rules, the teams prepared for a shoot out. Klassen was a brick wall and Ashlee White scored a beautiful goal to get Westminster the win.

Harrington Invitational
Dec. 16: Hockey-First Girls' 2 vs Milton Academy 3
First Girls’ Hockey had a tough one Dec. 16, as the team fell to a determined Milton Academy. Milton went up quickly as the team scored off a rebound just three minutes in. Rattled, Westminster quickly tried to regroup and get some offensive zone pressure. Abby Munger '20 executed some of the team's best breakout plays of the season, boosting her teammates’ energy. Finally, at the four-minute mark, Lilly Holmes '18 scored off a shot from the point by Ashlee White '18. The teams broke for the second period with the momentum very clearly up for grabs. The second period was back and forth as Westminster goalie, Hannah Stone '18, kept her team in the game. Between the second and the third, Westminster discussed the urgency with which the team needed to win the fifty-fifty battles. The team started the period with that urgency, as Lily von Stade '17 caught a perfect pass from Jill Parsons '19 and slid a perfect wrist shot past the Milton goalie to go up 2-1. Milton would not back down as just two minutes later, the team earned a penalty shot and capitalized, tying it up 2-2. Just five minutes later, Milton earned a power play and used the opportunity to go up 3-2. Despite some impressive efforts by Westminster, the team could not get the tying goal.

Dec. 16: Hockey-First Boys’ 3 vs Milton Academy 3
Westminster opened its 2016 Flood-Marr Tournament with a tie against Milton at Nobles on Dec. 16. The Martlets started the game with energy, scoring two goals in the first two minutes by capitalizing on their momentum. Jack Flanagan ‘17 scored the first tally and Will Gilson ‘20 notched the second goal. Milton was able to stabilize the momentum and battled back, scoring three unanswered goals. The Martlets traded chances throughout the game with Kai Edmonds ‘19 earning 26 saves. Westminster poured on the pressure in the second half of the third period to tie the game. The Martlets had 29 shots and were unable to capitalize on a string of excellent opportunities late in the game.

Dec. 17: Hockey-First Boys’ 4 vs Andover 1
The second game of the 2016 Flood-Marr Tournament saw a better result than the first for the Martlets. Andover was a strong, physical team, but the Martlets’ speed enabled them to get close to the net with many opportunities throughout the game. Tasso Housakos ‘18 opened the scoring in the first period and Sam Knowlton ‘17 netted the second goal of the first period for the Martlets. Andover was able to earn one tally in the middle of the second frame, but Westminster held on with two more goals in the same period. The first goal was scored by Michael Fiorini ‘18 and the second by Logan Hinton ‘17. Kai Edmonds ‘19 played strong in net for the Martlets and earned another win on the year.

Dec. 17: Hockey-First Boys’ 1 vs Hotchkiss School 3
In a pivotal game to decide the standings moving into Sunday, the Martlets faced the Bearcats late on Dec. 17 at Milton Academy. After a strong outing earlier in the day against Andover, the Martlets seemed a little flat-footed and took some time to get their engines rolling again. Hotchkiss scored first, late in the opening period on a power play. Special teams played a key role in all the games over the weekend, and this game was no exception. Westminster doubled up on penalties over the Bearcats, and this made any consistent momentum nearly impossible to muster. Cal LeClair ‘17 scored in the second period to give Westminster its only tally. Despite multiple opportunities in tight around the Hotchkiss net, the Martlets were unable to capitalize. Hotchkiss pulled away with two more goals in the third period despite another strong performance from Kai Edmonds ‘19 in net.

Flood-Marr Tournament
Dec. 18: Hockey-First Boys’ 1 vs Kimball Union Academy 4
In the third place game of the tournament, Westminster faced a formidable Kimball Union team on Dec. 18. Despite the outcome, this was perhaps the fastest, most hard-fought game of the weekend for the Martlets. Westminster generated many scoring opportunities, and the team was also able to withstand the steady pressure of the offensive-minded KUA team. Were it not for a short stretch in the second period where KUA netted two goals within a minute, the game would have had a very different texture down the stretch. As it stood, Westminster was forced to maintain its composure and try to claw back into the game. Westminster limited its penalty time in this game, but three unanswered goals and an empty net goal with one second remaining were the headline of this battle. Jake Kirby ‘17 scored the lone Martlet goal and Kai Edmonds ’19 had another strong outing in goal.

Hockey-Second Girls’
Dec. 12: Hockey-Second Girls’, 4 vs Mid Fairfield U14, 7
The Martlets faced a tough Mid Fairfield U14 team ‪on Monday night. With only two forward lines, the girls kept up the hustle and played very well. At the end of the first period the score was 3-3 with goals from Susie Mahoney ‘20, Kendall Brown ‘17 and Katie Neilsen ‘18. The team fought hard and made the most of each opportunity they had but couldn’t keep up with a well-seasoned and talented Mid Fairfield team. The final score was 4-7 after Neilsen scored again in the third. Lily Farriss ’19 recorded 37 saves, proving again that she is invaluable between the posts. Special thanks to Blake Cote ‘19 and Neilsen for playing with the team.
