Sports Highlights 05.06.2013

First Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets notched wins over neighbors Suffield, Porter’s and Ethel Walker this week.
Scoring goals in these games were Lindsay Hanau ’13, Annie French ’13, Eliza Christman ’15, Mary French ’15, StinaLadd ’15, Kaite O’Connor ’15, Susanna Baker ’15, Eleni Tebano ’13 and Megan Walsh ’14. Standing out on defense at various points were low defenders Madison Caan ’13 and Isabel Tibbetts ’15 as well as Olivia Bey ’15 and Meg Forelli ’15. Katie Savage ’15 was rock solid in goal all week.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
Second Girls’ Lacrosse had three games and three wins for this week over Suffield, Porter’s and Ethel Walker. Against the Tigers, the Martlets got out to a 9-0 start and never looked back. Anne Bitterli ’16 and Emily Mell ’14 each had three goals, Cricket DiGaloma ’14, Sarah Melanson ’16 and Emma Merlin ’16 each had two goals. After a slow start in their game with Porter’s, the Martlets were eventually able to pull ahead and hold on to the lead. Mell had a great game with a hat trick, followed by Katie Hovey ’14 and Georgia Morley ’15 with two goals apiece. Against Walkers, many girls contributed to the goals scored during this game. Katie Simeon ’16 had a red-hot game with four goals in the net. Bitterli, DiGaloma, Mell and Sarah Burstein ’15 scored two goals a piece. Evie Pope ’16 had a great game in goal.
 
Third Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets had a busy week with three contests, but they emerged with three wins as well. In a rematch with Renbrook, the game was back and forth and came down to the final seconds when Alyssa DiMaria ’15 scored the winning goal. CC Lynch ’15 came up with some clutch saves for the win. Claire Hotaling ’16 and DiMaria both showed grit on the field. In a 7-5 win against Hotchkiss, Hallie Feibel ’16 was a particular standout with her patience on defense. Goals were scored by DiMaria (4), Abby Newman ’16 (2) and Katie Deveaux ’16 (1). In the final game of the week against Avon, the Martlets went up 4-1, but their opponents never quit. The game ended 8-4 in favor of the Black and Gold. Lynch did a great job in net with seven saves and an interception. Newman led the offense with four goals.Olivia Durham ’15, Ana Wigmore ’16, Deveaux and Julia Carter ’16 added one apiece.
 
First Golf
The Martlets took on their toughest competition yet and retained their untarnished record.
In their first match of the week, Westminster (198) bested Taft (201), Avon Old Farms (208), and Hotchkiss (213). It was a solid team effort. Derek Leydecker ’15 shot a 38 (+2) to lead Westminster and earn tournament medalist honors. Other Westminster scores included George Doolan ’15 (39), Philippe Morin ’15 (39), Xavier Morin ’13 (40) and David Hallisey ’13 (42). Despite some shaky putting, the First Golf team also secured wins over NMH and Pomfret. Hallisey led the way for Westminster with a score of 39 (+3), followed by Doolan (40), Xavier Morin (41), Leydecker (41) and Philippe Morin (42).
 
Second Golf
The Second Golf team traveled to Watertown, Conn., to compete against Taft and Avon Old Farms. Westminster’s total of 212 defeated Avon's 228, but it wasn’t strong enough to claim victory over the red-clad hosts who shot a solid 206. Scores included Will Swanson ’15 (45); Taggard Corriveau ’16 (41); Addison Cilmi ’16 (42); Byron Tomcik (42); Teddy Sirbaugh ’16 (45) and MacKenzie Hawkes ’15 (42).
 
First Softball
Hayley Ahouse ’13 hit a two-run homer, tripled, and had four runs batted in to lead First Softball to an 11th consecutive win against Berkshire. Amanda Savino ’14, Rachel Monroe ’14, and Kat Pate ’14 each drove in numerous runs for the Martlets. Savino only allowed three Berkshire hits, and Jordan Gowdy ’14 caught a great game. In their second game of the week, Brooke Wolejko ’14, Monroe, and Gowdy each had multiple extra-base hits to lead Westminster over Pomfret 11-2. Savino and Jade Marlowe ’15 combined to pitch a super game for the Martlets, allowing just two Pomfret hits. On Sunday, Rachel Monroe and Amanda Savino played well in the New England All-Star Game held at Loomis Chaffee.
 
First Boys’ Lacrosse
In a great game that went to the last possession, Westminster never trailed and relied on tough D with Ben Shively ’14 (game ball) grabbing seven GBs to beat one of the nation’s top lacrosse teams, Brunswick 8-7. Danny O’Connell ’13 went two and two, and Jamie Moross ’14 secured key possessions at the face-off for a nice league win on Hovey Field.
 
Second Girls’ Tennis
On Saturday, Second Girls’ Tennis was victorious over K-O 7-0. The singles players Mimi Connelly ’15, Katherine Ogden ’16 and Annie Lacey ’13 won in straight sets. Sarah Holmes ’13 lost her first set at No.4 singles but came back to win the second 7-5 and then won the tiebreaker to win the match. The doubles teams of Claire Egan ’14 and Caty Pooley ’13 at No. 1, Margot Hahn ’14 and Susie Carter ’16 at No. 2, and Elizabeth Foster ’15 and Nina Montross ’16 at No. 3 also won in straight sets.
 
Boys’ Track
The Martlets beat both Hopkins and Williston North Hampton, 86 to 46 and 80 to 61 respectively. Meet highlights were Jackson Price ’15 coming in first place with a season PR in the long jump, Travis Percy ’14 coming in first in the 800 by shaving a second off his personal best and Kevin Murray ’13 coming in first in the 110 hurdles. David Carter ’15 came in second in both the long jump and triple jump. The boys had a dramatic finish by coming in second in the 4x400 meter hurdles as WNH narrowly won. It was a great day for the boys who should be truly proud of their achievements.
 
Girls’ Track
The Martlets had two great wins over Hopkins and Williston Northampton. Coming in first for the Martlets against Williston were Mary Anderson ’14 in the 1500 and 3000, Yvonne Pruitt ’14 in the shotput, Kiley Loureiro ’15 in the 300 hurdles, Erin Ozturk ’15 in the discus, Klara Lindstrom ’14 in the triple jump, and the Westminster 4X400 team of Lindstrom, Jen Girard ’14, Grace Brentano ’16 and Bridget Gorham ’13. Coming in first for the Martlets against Hopkins were Chanler Nemetz ’14 in the high jump, Jen Girard ’14 in the 200, Pruitt in the shotput, Lindstrom in the long jump and high jump, and Anderson in the 3000.
