With a great deal of excitement, enthusiasm, Grit and Grace (and little fanfare), the Westminster Girls' Golf Team stepped up to the first tee and into the history books as the school's newest Martlet team.
As many of you might know first hand, Westminster had previously enjoyed the talents of some female golf "pioneers" who distinguished themselves as members of the Boys' teams before moving on to play successfully at the college level. Building upon this legacy, and with some thoughtful planning on the part of Tim Joncas and Greg Marco, Westminster positioned itself to field a Girls' team of nine "up-and-comers" for the 2016 season. I am honored and excited to be their first coach.
From the very beginning of this season, our team's collective attitude, work ethic, and commitment were just what I was hoping for during our rookie campaign. Our group of nine players is committed to establishing a culture of skill development, competition, friendship, fun, and ultimately a love for the game. They believe that "if they build it, others will come."
To date, we are 1-3 in our competitive matches (the girls compete in a match play format), and we divide our week between playing golf rounds, sweating through fitness and yoga workouts, and practicing both on the range and the greens at Hop Meadow Country Club. Ken Doyle, the club professional and good friend of mine, kindly led a wonderful clinic that was invaluable in giving each player some specific strategies for improving swing mechanics. From my vantage point, every player is working to improve her game while gaining a better understanding and appreciation for all things golf.
I am looking forward to seeing you on the first tee, somewhere!
