Science Classes Visit American Museum of Natural History

AP Biology and Astronomy classes traveled to New York City Jan. 14 to visit the American Museum of Natural History.

For AP Biology, the trip included a biotechnology laboratory during which students used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis to identify a marker for GMO foods. The students then visited the Hall of Human Origins, Hall of Biodiversity, Hall of Vertebrate Origins and a special exhibit about the essential microflora that exists on and inside human beings.

Meanwhile, Astronomy students attended a planetarium show focused on dark matter. They then visited an exhibit which displayed the scale of objects in the universe followed by tours of the Hall of the Universe and the Hall of Planet Earth.

“The trip allowed all of these students a different view of ideas that we had been discussing in our Westminster classrooms,” said AP Biology teacher Mark de Kanter. “It was a great trip!”
