Westminster Student Places Third in TEDxTeen Competition

Westminster Fourth Former Teagan Stedman placed third in the 2015 TEDxTeen competition presented by the We Are Family Foundation that focuses on teens and their power to simply change the world. It was part of the Simply Irresistible: The Next Big Thing campaign by TedxTeen and the software supplier SAP.

As a part of the application process Teagan created a 60-second video about a proposed methodology for delivering drug therapy to pediatric cancer patients that would not destroy healthy cells. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr3SHLZNjhk&feature=youtu.be He also provided supplemental information detailing the science of the idea. The winners of the competition were announced at the TEDxTeen event in New York City on May 16.

When he was 8 years old, Teagan founded Shred Kids’ Cancer, a charity that lets kids try and do something for other kids who are suffering. “Its a way to make kids who have cancer know that we are here for them and show them we care and give them strength,” said Teagan. “We raise money to help fund cancer treatments used in clinical trials to find the cure. We are proud to have funded over eight clinical trials and even funded a clinical trial that would not have started if it wasn’t for Shred Kids’ Cancer!”

The research Teagan presented in the TEDxTeen competition was Internet based. “I had taken up an interest in nanotechnology since last summer when I took a course called Science of the Future at a Cambridge summer program called Oxbridge,” he explained. “I read (and am still reading) a book on nanotechnology and nanoscience out of curiosity, and began reading about the prospect of nanobots, hence becoming interested in molecular motors, both synthetic and biological, for use in the propulsion of nanoparticles in medical applications.” He hopes to find space in a laboratory in order to begin experimental research on the project.

Teagan is also busy preparing a 5k/10k Shred Kids’ Cancer fundraiser called Rock the Run for October in Simsbury.
